I Will Do This

Weakness of mind permeates one’s entire life. You MUST train your mind, just as one would train one’s body, for it contains your resolve.

Be honest with the decisions you chose not to make. “I will work out tomorrow” really means “I choose NOT to workout now.”

You cannot control what happens tomorrow. No matter what you think, there is a chance that you will not workout tomorrow. Something could come up, or you could simply change your mind again. So, attempting to lighten the reality of the decision you’re making by adding “I’ll do it later” is a symbol of a weak mind.

That said, you can control NOW.

Allowing the mind to make weak choices also means it’s easier to make other weak choices in the future.

Choosing not to mow the lawn today can mean eating fast food for dinner tomorrow. How is this possible? Giving in one time begins to create a pattern of quitting within your resolve. A simple example of this is gambling, or drinking. When one has a “problem” with either drinking or gambling, one typically cannot allow a lapse (ie have a drink, or drop a dime in a slot machine). The reason behind this is that a single lapse will remind the brain how “good” it feels to return to that state of intoxication.

While the common individual does not have to deal with such acute levels of temptation, it should be noted that small concessions will have the same cumulative effect as one epic lapse. An example of this is a person of great health, who works out all the time, submits to the temptation to skip a workout one day, then another, then another. Each individual day may seem insignificant but fast forward two years and the person’s health will have drastically deteriorated. The same is true of one’s resolve. If you let it deteriorate, it will remain weak without proper training.
