Everyone Used to Believe

As children, everyone believes.  Children believe in Santa, or the Easter Bunny; they even believe their parents. Obviously one cannot survive by merely believing everything.  We must grow up, we must shed belief, and come to know.  Unfortunately, the current trend is to shed all belief and rely simply on knowing. From a functional standpoint this is fine because knowledge tends to link directly with survival.  ‘I know that fire is hot, so I will not touch it.’ That said, shedding belief is to discard one of the finest points of humanity. The most successful people, the ones who have had the greatest impact on all of us, the few that inspire us have continued to believe.  They’ve chosen not just to survive, but to thrive. That is what separates Michael Jordan from a bench warmer, Bruce Lee from another gym rat, or Nikola Tesla from being just another tinkerer. They chose to know, but also to continue believing. What do you still believe in?
